An Isoperimetric Inequality for Fundamental Tones of Free Plates
We establish an isoperimetric inequality for the fundamental tone (first
nonzero eigenvalue) of the free plate of a given area, proving the ball is
maximal. Given , the free plate eigenvalues and eigenfunctions
are determined by the equation
together with certain natural boundary conditions. The boundary conditions are
complicated but arise naturally from the plate Rayleigh quotient, which
contains a Hessian squared term . We adapt Weinberger's method from
the corresponding free membrane problem, taking the fundamental modes of the
unit ball as trial functions. These solutions are a linear combination of

Topological and geometrical restrictions, free-boundary problems and self-gravitating fluids
Let (P1) be certain elliptic free-boundary problem on a Riemannian manifold
(M,g). In this paper we study the restrictions on the topology and geometry of
the fibres (the level sets) of the solutions f to (P1). We give a technique
based on certain remarkable property of the fibres (the analytic representation
property) for going from the initial PDE to a global analytical
characterization of the fibres (the equilibrium partition condition). We study
this analytical characterization and obtain several topological and geometrical
properties that the fibres of the solutions must possess, depending on the
topology of M and the metric tensor g. We apply these results to the classical
problem in physics of classifying the equilibrium shapes of both Newtonian and
relativistic static self-gravitating fluids. We also suggest a relationship

Effect of initial conditions on the speed of reaction-diffusion fronts
The effect of initial conditions on the speed of propagating fronts in reaction-diffusion equations is examined in the framework of the Hamilton-Jacobi theory. We study the transition between quenched and nonquenched fronts both analytically and numerically for parabolic and hyperbolic reaction diffusion. Nonhomogeneous media are also analyzed and the effect of algebraic initial conditions is also discussed
Ecological Invasion, Roughened Fronts, and a Competitor's Extreme Advance: Integrating Stochastic Spatial-Growth Models
Both community ecology and conservation biology seek further understanding of
factors governing the advance of an invasive species. We model biological
invasion as an individual-based, stochastic process on a two-dimensional
landscape. An ecologically superior invader and a resident species compete for
space preemptively. Our general model includes the basic contact process and a
variant of the Eden model as special cases. We employ the concept of a
"roughened" front to quantify effects of discreteness and stochasticity on
invasion; we emphasize the probability distribution of the front-runner's
relative position. That is, we analyze the location of the most advanced
invader as the extreme deviation about the front's mean position. We find that
a class of models with different assumptions about neighborhood interactions
exhibit universal characteristics. That is, key features of the invasion
dynamics span a class of models, independently of locally detailed demographic
rules. Our results integrate theories of invasive spatial growth and generate
novel hypotheses linking habitat or landscape size (length of the invading
front) to invasion velocity, and to the relative position of the most advanced

Propagation and blocking in periodically hostile environments
We study the persistence and propagation (or blocking) phenomena for a
species in periodically hostile environments. The problem is described by a
reaction-diffusion equation with zero Dirichlet boundary condition. We first
derive the existence of a minimal nonnegative nontrivial stationary solution
and study the large-time behavior of the solution of the initial boundary value
problem. To the main goal, we then study a sequence of approximated problems in
the whole space with reaction terms which are with very negative growth rates
outside the domain under investigation. Finally, for a given unit vector, by
using the information of the minimal speeds of approximated problems, we
provide a simple geometric condition for the blocking of propagation and we
derive the asymptotic behavior of the approximated pulsating travelling fronts.
Moreover, for the case of constant diffusion matrix, we provide two conditions
for which the limit of approximated minimal speeds is positive
On a free boundary problem for a two-species weak competition system
[[abstract]]We study a LotkaâVolterra type weak competition model with a free boundary in a one-dimensional habitat. The main objective is to understand the asymptotic behavior of two competing species spreading via a free boundary. We also provide some sufficient conditions for spreading success and spreading failure, respectively. Finally, when spreading successfully, we provide an estimate to show that the spreading speed (if exists) cannot be faster than the minimal speed of traveling wavefront solutions for the competition model on the whole real line without a free boundary.[[incitationindex]]SCI[[booktype]]ç´ćŹ[[booktype]]éťĺ
Primary Invasive Aspergillosis of the Digestive Tract: Report of Two Cases and Review of the Literature
BACKGROUND: Disseminated aspergillosis is thought to occur as a result of vascular invasion from the lungs with subsequent bloodstream dissemination, and portals of entry other than sinuses and/or the respiratory tract remain speculative. METHODS: We report two cases of primary aspergillosis in the digestive tract and present a detailed review of eight of the 23 previously-published cases for which detailed data are available. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: These ten cases presented with symptoms suggestive of typhlitis, with further peritonitis requiring laparotomy and small bowel segmental resection. All cases were characterized by the absence of pulmonary disease at the time of histologically-confirmed gastrointestinal involvement with vascular invasion by branched Aspergillus hyphae. These cases suggest that the digestive tract may represent a portal of entry for Aspergillus species in immunocompromised patients
Search for a W ' boson decaying to a muon and a neutrino in pp collisions at âs =7 TeV

The official published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2011 ElsevierA new heavy gauge boson, W', decaying to a muon and a neutrino, is searched for in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass of 7 TeV. The data, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns. No significant excess of events above the standard model expectation is found in the transverse mass distribution of the muon-neutrino system. Masses below 1.40 TeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level for a sequential standard-model-like W'.
